SUV Rollovers

These days SUV (Sport Utility Vehicles) popularity is at an all time high, particularly with families. Sport Utility Vehicles are designed with a high center of gravity, making the potential of rollovers during difficult maneuvering very high. This design defect puts many adults and children at risk.  More than 10,000 people die each year as a result of rollover accidents in the United States. Approximately 33% of all passenger vehicle fatalities result from rollover crashes. Over 50% of single-vehicle accidents are rollovers and over 35% of fatal crashes involve SUVs.

Government rollover tests show that even the most stable SUV is more likely to roll over than the least stable car. Over 30 of the 2005 SUVs tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earned just one or two stars.  Congress has recently produced a Rollover Resistance Rating System. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last year was prepared to include rollover risk on its safety Web site, but automakers complained the ratings would not be accurate.
